Your Words Matter: Affirmations to Shape Your Birth Story

Words are powerful, we all know that.

During pregnancy and birth, the way we speak to ourselves, that inner voice, can have an even deeper impact. It’s a time of immense change, both physically and emotionally, and our mindset matters more than ever. That’s why positive affirmations are such a key part of the “Hypno Toolkit” and have become a powerful resource for the women I support in my Hypnobirthing courses. Gentle yet impactful, these affirmations help quiet the negative narrative and bring us back to a place of calm, confidence, trust, and self-belief.

Why Affirmations Matter

Our thoughts influence our feelings, our feelings influence our actions, and our actions ultimately shape our reality. During pregnancy, when your body is already doing the incredible work of growing a new life, your mind is busy scripting internal narratives. Are these narratives filled with fear and doubt, or are they empowering and positive?

This is where affirmations step in, helping to tilt the balance towards positivity and strength.

The Science Behind Affirmations

Affirmations aren’t just feel-good quotes you stick on the fridge, they’re actually grounded in psychology. The subconscious mind is where all our core beliefs are stored, and by repeating positive statements each day, (the sub loves repetition) we can begin to rewire those beliefs. It’s a simple but powerful way to replace any negative thoughts with more supportive, empowering ones. That shift in mindset is so important when preparing for birth, a journey that’s just as much mental as it is physical.

Crafting Your Own Pregnancy Affirmations

Creating affirmations that truly resonate with you is a deeply personal process. They should reflect your hopes, soothe your fears, and strengthen your sense of self.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Keep it positive: Frame your affirmations in a positive light. Instead of saying, “I won’t be afraid,” try “I am strong and confident.”

Use the present tense: Phrase your affirmations as if they’re happening now. Say “I am calm and in control,” rather than “I will be calm and in control.”

Make it believable: Your mind can sense when something feels off. Choose words that feel authentic and realistic, affirmations that reflect who you are and how you genuinely want to feel.

Here are a few affirmations I love and share in my hypnobirthing classes:

“Each contraction brings me closer to meeting my baby.”

“I trust my body to know what to do.”

“I am surrounded by love and support.”

“I focus on what I can control and I let go of what I can’t.”

Integrating Affirmations into Your Daily Routine

To really feel the benefits of affirmations, they need to become part of your everyday rhythm, something your subconscious mind grows familiar with. That way, when labour begins, you’ll already know which affirmations bring you calm, strength, and focus in moments that might feel challenging.

Starting your day with a few positive affirmations is always a win. Say them out loud, write them down, stick them to your bathroom mirror, listen to them on voice notes, or add them to a vision board. The more you surround yourself with these messages, the more naturally they’ll take root in your mind.

Remember, you’re not just preparing to bring a baby into the world, you’re stepping into one of the most powerful and transformative experiences of your life. Give yourself every advantage, starting with the thoughts you choose to nurture.

Affirmations are a simple yet powerful way to stay centred, confident, and connected throughout pregnancy and into motherhood.

Your words are powerful — use them with intention.
