Feeling Overwhelmed About Birth Preparation? You’re Not Alone.
If you’re pregnant right now, there’s a good chance your phone has already seen a few late-night Google searches.
“Do I need antenatal classes?”
“What is Hypnobirthing?”
“How do I prepare for birth?”
“Which antenatal courses are actually worthwhile?”
There is so much information out there, and while that can be helpful, it can also feel overwhelming. One article tells you one thing, another suggests something different, and suddenly preparing for birth starts to feel like a full-time research project.
Most parents I meet say the same thing.
They want to feel prepared.
They want to feel confident.
And they want to know they are making informed choices.
Preparing for birth should never feel confusing or stressful. It should feel supportive, empowering, and reassuring.
That is exactly why I created My Bump & Me, and our My Bump to Baby Group Course here in Horsforth, West Yorkshire.
Why Preparing for Birth Matters
Birth is one of the biggest transitions in life, an experience you’ll never forget, yet many people reach the final weeks of pregnancy still feeling unsure about what to expect.
It is completely normal.
For many years, birth education has often been limited to short hospital antenatal sessions or brief conversations during midwife appointments. While these are incredibly valuable, they often cannot go into the depth many parents would like.
Preparing for birth can help you:
- Understand how your body works during labour
- Feel more confident making decisions about your care
- Reduce anxiety around the unknown
- Help your birth partner feel more involved and prepared
- Learn practical tools for staying in control and focused during labour
Many parents also benefit from relaxation-based pregnancy support. Sessions such as My Bump & Chill pregnancy relaxation classes, are designed to help you slow down, regulate your nervous system and practise techniques that support you during pregnancy and labour.
Birth preparation is not about controlling every outcome.
Birth is beautifully unpredictable.
It is about feeling informed, supported and confident, whatever path your birth takes.
What Most Antenatal Courses Cover
Antenatal courses can vary quite a lot, depending on who is running them and the focus of the class.
Some focus on the medical side of labour, helping you understand what happens during birth and what inductions and interventions might be available. Others focus more on Hypnobirthing, which teaches techniques to support relaxation, breathing and mindset during labour. Some courses focus on infant feeding or baby care, while others offer first aid training for babies.
All of these areas are important and incredibly helpful for new parents, but this can lead to something I see often.
Why Many Parents End Up Booking Multiple Classes
Many parents start by booking an antenatal course.
Then some realise they would also like to learn about Hypnobirthing.
Maybe someone suggests a baby first aid class.
They may feel infant feeding support would be helpful too.
Before long, they can be juggling several different courses across different locations and evenings.
While each class can be valuable, it can start to feel overwhelming and time consuming during a stage of life where energy is already limited.
Pregnancy should not feel like a long checklist of classes to attend, which is why I created a different approach.
A Different Approach: One Course That Covers Everything
The My Bump to Baby Group Course was created to bring together everything parents need to feel prepared for birth and early parenthood in one supportive space. To the best of my knowledge, it is the only course in West Yorkshire that combines all these elements together:
- Hypnobirthing
- Midwife-led antenatal education
- Midwife-led infant feeding support
- Daisy First Aid training for babies (0–12 months)
- A postpartum coffee morning with a postnatal doula
Instead of booking multiple separate classes, parents can access everything they need in one carefully designed course. This creates a complete antenatal experience, giving you knowledge, confidence and practical tools without information overload.
And just as importantly, it creates a sense of community and encourages friendships and support networks with other expectant parents.
What Makes My Bump & Me Different
One of the most important things about this course is the team behind it. Each area is delivered by a specialist who works with families every day.
Hypnobirthing
Hypnobirthing is centred around the connection between the mind and body.
You will learn how breathing techniques, relaxation and mindset can support your body during labour. Many parents find this approach helps them feel calmer and more in control.
Hypnobirthing sessions are led by Lindsey, founder of My Bump & Me, a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Hypnobirthing Practitioner. Lindsey specialises in helping parents understand the connection between mindset, hormones and the nervous system so they can approach birth feeling calm, confident and prepared.
If you’d like to learn more about how Hypnobirthing works, you can explore Lindsey’s approach here.
Hypnobirthing is not about achieving a “perfect birth”. It is about understanding your body and having tools that help you stay grounded throughout the experience.
Midwife-Led Antenatal Education
Our antenatal education sessions are led by an experienced midwife, who helps parents understand:
- the stages of labour
- how the body works during birth
- pain relief options
- navigating the maternity system
- making informed choices during pregnancy and labour
This practical knowledge helps parents feel more confident and better prepared for the journey ahead.
These sessions are delivered by Bailey, an experienced midwife with over 15 years in the birth world. Bailey focuses on body mechanics, helping parents understand how the body is designed to birth and how to confidently navigate modern maternity care.
Infant Feeding Support
Feeding your baby can be one of the most emotional parts of early parenthood.
Having access to specialist infant feeding support helps parents understand what to expect, how feeding works in the early days, and how to navigate any challenges with confidence and reassurance.
Infant feeding sessions are led by Rea, a midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). With over a decade of experience, Rea provides evidence-based, non-judgemental guidance to help parents feel confident feeding and bonding with their baby.
Daisy First Aid Training
One of the most common worries new parents share is:
“What if something happens to my baby?”
Daisy First Aid provides clear, practical training that helps parents feel confident responding to situations such as choking, CPR or common infant emergencies.
Knowing what to do can make a huge difference to peace of mind.
Baby first aid training is delivered by Fay, a Daisy First Aid instructor and former teacher who specialises in making first aid simple and accessible. Her sessions give parents the knowledge and confidence to respond calmly if the unexpected happens.
Postpartum Doula Support
Birth preparation should not end when the baby arrives.
One of the most special parts of the course is the postpartum coffee morning, where parents can reconnect after their babies are born. This is a chance to share experiences, ask questions, and feel supported during the early weeks of parenthood.
Postnatal support is provided by Rachel, The Listening Doula, who has over 14 years of experience supporting families through pregnancy and early parenthood. Rachel’s focus is helping parents feel safe, heard and supported as they transition into life with a newborn.
The Power of Ongoing Support After Birth
The early weeks with a newborn can be magical, but they can also feel intense, hard and emotional. Having a community of other parents who understand what you are experiencing can make an enormous difference.
The postpartum coffee morning offers:
- connection with other new parents
- support from a postnatal doula
- a relaxed safe space to talk openly
- reassurance that you are not alone
Parenthood is not something anyone should have to navigate in isolation, it was never meant to be done alone. Support, connection and community matter just as much after birth as they do before.
